XBALL?
"Why is the XBOX logo an X on a ball instead of a box?"
I still haven't found an answer to this question. If you find any sources that explain the design motivations behind this logo, please send them to me! In the meantime, let's redesign!
The first step: take measurements by drawing a circle with the same diameter as the sphere in the original logo. With this measure I make a square.
To draw the X, I take the thickness of the original X and form a blue cube. It will work as the anchor points to be able to design the legs of the letter.
I create a shape that reaches the edges of the square with the same thickness as the cube.
I make a minimum thickness delimitation using the measurements of the original logo.
I create anchor points following the cube created at the beginning. To thin the legs of the X, I take the points from the ends of the letter to the minimum thickness delimited by the blue cubes. Then I duplicate the shape and mirror it, forming a real X.
The "X" goes on top of a box (instead of a ball 🤭). To create the base of this box in perspective, I use half of the square created initially.
Then I make a smaller copy and position it further back. I finish with a “lid” connecting the points of both shapes.
Note: I used Illustrator's 3D shape generator, but then I preferred to do it manually at another angle.
I create a perspective grid and place the X at its base. Before placing it on the grid, I have to enlarge the letter and rotate it 45º.
To finish, I cut the excesses and made the legs.
